Ramadan Mubarek: A Time for Reflection, Kindness and Sweet Traditions

Hello readers,

Happy Thursday, and Ramadan Mubarek!

Some of my earliest and fondest memories are of Ramadan nights at my grandfather’s house. My entire family—parents, aunts, uncles, cousins—would gather on the floor, where a long dastarkhan was carefully rolled out. Cushions and pillows lined the edges, creating a space of warmth, laughter, and quiet anticipation.

At the center of it all sat a bowl of dates, passed from hand to hand as we waited for the Maghrib prayer. In our family, my grandfather always took the first date, followed by each person in order of age. But I had a special place right beside him, and without fail, he’d slip me one before my turn—a small indulgence that made me feel special and loved.

Even though I wasn’t fasting, I could feel the significance of these gatherings. The scent of warm spices drifted from the kitchen, dishes were carefully arranged, and there was an excitement in breaking bread together, the unspoken bond of generations, the quiet joy of simply being together. Ramadan at Grandpa’s house wasn’t just about food—it was a celebration of togetherness, a feast for the soul, and a reminder that the simplest moments often hold the most meaning.

As the crescent moon signals the start of Ramadan, millions around the world prepare for a time of renewal and reflection. While fasting from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib) is a key tradition, Ramadan is about more than just abstaining from food—it’s about practicing patience, gratitude, and generosity.

It’s about pausing amidst the busyness of life, gathering around the table with loved ones, and feeling the day’s weight dissolve with the first sip of water. Even if you don’t observe Ramadan, its message is universal: to slow down, be present, and embrace kindness.

That plate of dates on our family’s dastarkhan? It was more than just food—it was a bridge to tradition, a connection to something greater. For centuries, Muslims have broken their fasts with dates and water, just as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) did.

Beyond their symbolism, dates are naturally packed with nutrients, providing a quick source of energy after a long day. And when paired with something indulgent—like rich pistachio butter and a hint of chocolate—they transform into something truly special.

One bite brings me right back to Ramadan nights of my childhood—sweet, rich, and filled with the warmth of shared moments. One of the most beautiful aspects of Ramadan is generosity, both in spirit and in action. It’s a time to give freely, whether through acts of service, charity, or simply showing kindness. That’s why we’re so proud of our Acts of Kindness initiative at Nuttinosh. With every jar you purchase, we include a small card encouraging a thoughtful gesture—because even the smallest act of kindness can create a ripple effect.

For those in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, we’ve linked a Ramadan event calendar by the Sahan Journal, featuring community iftars, fundraisers, and gatherings—a beautiful way to come together and make a difference.

Even if you’ve never observed Ramadan, I hope this month inspires you. Maybe it’s a moment of gratitude before a meal. Maybe it’s the decision to check in on a loved one. Maybe it’s simply choosing kindness when it’s needed most.

Because at the end of the day, Ramadan isn’t just about fasting. It’s about feeding the soul.

Wishing you a month of love, renewal, and sweet moments shared.

With gratitude,

The Nuttinosh Family
